Critical Tips on How to Maintain Your Cummins Celect ECM

A Cummins Celect ECM requires certain maintenance and management rules and guidelines. You need to watch out for these crucial factors when you care for a Cummins ECM. The most important thing is to never pressure wash ECMs.

Caring for Your Cummins Celect ECM

The Cummins Celect ECM is designed to handle road spray and that eventually fails. But pressure washers can cause the water and chemicals to penetrate the seals. This destroys the ECM further causing the warranty to become null and void. Another important aspect to watch out for are oil leaks. Oil leaking across the harness like a wick and into the ECM can lead to issues. The ECM always needs to be disconnected before welding. It works to take off the C plug or injector harness from the ECM prior to welding.

If it is not useful or practical to remove the C plug, what you can do at the very minimum is to disconnect the batteries completely. Also ensure that the power wires to the ECM are not touching the metal. Disconnect the ECM before batteries are changed, working on the starter, alternator or charging the batteries. The negative cable needs to be removed first. Not those ECMs respond very negatively to power shorts or spikes.

Battery cables do not need to be installed backwards. Connecting battery cables correctly is important otherwise the ECM is instantaneously damaged.

How to Look After Your Cummins Celect ECM

While charging the batteries of the ECM, avoid jumpstarting. In case the batteries are dead, disconnect the ECM and charge the batteries with the charger. Then reconnect the ECM and the batteries and commence normally. Celect and Celect plus components should also not be intermixed together. This generally happens when an engine is replaced using a different generation used engine. If you put a Celect engine in a Celect Plus automobile, full conversion is critical. It is imperative that the electronics including the ECM should match the engine generation being used. Engine sensor harnesses must match your Cummins Celect ECM. However, the injector harness and OEM harness can be modified with a Dremel or soldiering iron for safety detents to fit. There is a lack of conversion calibrations for using a Celect ECM on a Celect Plus car or vice versa. Another common source of issues is the inline fuse for the ECM power supply and wires tend to rub and short to the battery box. So, ensure that you take adequate precautions to ensure your ECM functions well.
